
Minister Filipus Nino Pereira, known as Nino Pereira “Prego,” is a Timorese politician deeply involved in engaged in development promotion through trade and industry, contributing toa better quality of life and prosperity of the people of Timor-Leste. In his rather intense agenda, he has been visiting and stimulating Micro Small and Medium Enterprises, and strengthens Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to boost the manufacturing industry, transform local produces into innovative and value added products and encourage communities to generate income from districts level to the capital by engaging in economic activities, thus contributing to the country’s economic diversification and sustainability.
Mr. Nino Pereira has served as Minister of Commerce and Industry of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste since July 1, 2023. In this role, he leads the design, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of public policies approved by the Council of Ministers, focusing especially on Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in commercial and industrial economic activities nationwide.
During the resistance period, Mr. Nino Pereira, together with Timorese students studying in Indonesia, participated in various demonstrations, mobilized the youth — particularly students to proactively engage in the national liberation struggle and
voicing out the rights of the Timorese people to self-determination and Independence, he has been a public figure fully engaged in academic training of young
people and holding key positions as a member of subsequent governments.
Mr. Nino Pereira holds a Master's degree in Human Resource Management from the University Gajayana with degree awarded in 2011; and a Bachelor's degree in Development Economics from the University Merdeka Malang, Indonesia with the degree awarded 1997. He has complemented his academic training with a Research Course at the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER) in 2006 and a Leadership training in Bangkok, Thailand, in 2004.
Before holding the current position, Mr. Nino Pereira executed the functions as Vice Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Environment from 2015 to 2017, after having been the Secretary of State for Industry and Cooperatives from 2012 to 2015, and Chief of Staff to the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports ftom 2007 to 2012.
As an academic lecturer, particularly when he was not holding cabinet position in the government, Mr. Nino Pereira was a teacher at the Institute of Business (IOB) in Dili from 2018 to 2019, teacher at the Universiadade da Paz (UNPAZ) in Dili from 2005 to 2007, and a teacher at the Faculty of Economics at the Universidade Nacional do Timor-Lorosa’e (UNTL), and Head of the Department of Economic Sciences and Development Studies and the same National University of Timor-Leste.
Born on April 10, 1974, in Dili, he is the son of Francisco Soares Pereira and Catarina Nuhan Pereira.
