Gleno, Ermera, December 16, 2025
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, through the Office of the Vice Minister, together with the Civil Society Services and Social Affairs Unit of the Presidency of the Republic and the Office of the Vice Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Tourism and Environment, carried out a charity action for the inmates of Gleno Prison, Fatuquero, Municipality of Ermera.
This charitable action is a program of the Civil Society and Social Affairs Services Unit of the Presidency of the Republic and works together with the government, through the Offices of the Vice Prime Minister and the Vice Minister of MCI, to directly deliver 110 Christmas baskets to inmates, including the cleaning staff working in the prison, with basic necessities, such as clothes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo and even sports equipment.
According to official figures, the Gleno prison currently houses 97 prisoners, including 20 women, 3 babies (2 girls and 1 boy) and 4 foreigners. The babies remained with their mother, as she was the one who was in an irregular situation, while the child was innocent. This is based on the law that allows the child to stay with the mother until he turns 2 years old before being handed over to the family. Prison authorities, in cooperation with the health sector, will continue to pay special attention to infants, as they are innocent and in need of protection.
