Vice-Minister of Commerce and Industry Opens ASEAN Intellectual Property Policy and Cooperation Workshop for Timor-Leste's Integration

His Excellency the Vice-Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Augusto Junior Trindade, opened the Workshop themed "Workshop on ASEAN Intellectual Property Policy and Cooperation for Timor-Lesteโ€™s Integration" in the Suai Room at Timor-Plaza, Dili.

In his opening remarks, the Vice-Minister of Commerce and Industry stated that the Workshop is a highly significant moment in the national development journey. As Timor-Leste prepares for full accession to ASEAN and progresses towards WTO (World Trade Organization) membership, Intellectual Property (IP) emerges as a crucial driver for industrialization, Innovation, and economic diversification.

The government official highlighted that a strong IP framework is essential to foster creativity, technological progress, and entrepreneurship, all of which are fundamental long-term pillars for a resilient, competitive, and diversified economy. This system not only protects innovation but also builds trust among investors, businesses, and creators, ensuring that the fruits of innovation contribute to sustainable national growth.

The Workshop offers an opportunity not only to learn from ASEAN's experiences but also to shape a shared vision on how intellectual property can contribute to Timor-Leste's industrial transformation and sustainable economic future.

He encouraged all participants to actively engage in the discussions, share their experiences, and explore innovative ways to align the national IP framework with ASEAN's collective priorities.

Through dialogue, collaboration, and continued commitment, it is believed that common objectives will be achieved to promote Timor-Leste's integration into regional and global markets, and also to ensure that innovation and creativity can bring inclusive, long-term prosperity.

The Vice-Minister also extended his deep gratitude to the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the European Union (EU) for their financial and technical support, not only for this workshop but also for the ongoing assistance in Timor-Leste's ASEAN and WTO accession process.

The Workshop was a one-day event and saw the participation of representatives from various line ministries, the European Union Ambassador, directors from the MCI, and others.
